Symposium Overview

The 18th IEEE Symposium on Mass Storage Systems and 9th NASA Goddard Space Flight Center Conference on Mass Storage will focus on the issues surrounding the storage of large data collections that are web accessible. This Conference provides a forum for discussion of issues relevant to the management of large volumes of data. The Conference encourages all interested organizations to discuss long term mass storage requirements and experiences in fielding solutions. Emphasis is on current and future practical solutions addressing issues in data management, storage systems and media, data acquisition, long term retention of data, and data distribution.

Tuesday, April 17 will feature a day of tutorials on "Emerging Standards Impacting Storage System Architectures", featuring speakers from AIIM, DMTF, IEEE, IETF, and SNIA in the morning. And a speaker on XML in the afternoon.

Wednesday, April 18 will offer speakers on Grids, Applications, and Filesystems.

Thursday, April 19 includes presentation of Invited Papers, and papers on Benchmarks, Applications, as well as "2-Minute Poster Madness" and "Extemporaneous Talks" sessions.

Friday, April 20 Will focus on Emerging Technologies, featuring a Roundtable on 'Emerging Removable Media Products', and Vendor Presentations

In addition, a Vendor Expo will feature commercial products and capabilities. Organizations interested in reserving space for the Vendor Expo should contact Ben Kobler at 301-614-5231 or kobler@gsfc.nasa.gov. Space will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.

The registration fee for the symposium includes the Conference Proceedings, continental breakfasts, morning and afternoon breaks, lunches, a single ticket of admission and bus transportation (and parking for the buses) to the Wednesday reception at the Birch Aquarium, and admission to the Thursday Poster Session and Reception. If you decide to drive to the Aquarium and not use the provided bus transportation, you will be required to pay the $3.00 parking fee at the entrance to the Aquarium. This is not included in the symposium registration fee.

The cost for the reception and transportation to the Birch Aquarium for attendees is included in the registration fee. There is an additional charge of $35 per guest.* If you prefer to drive to the Aquarium, you will be required to pay a $3.00 parking fee at the entrance to the Aquarium. This is not included in the registration fee.

Thursday, April 19, 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm, Evening Reception and Poster Session

The cost for the reception for attendees is included in the registration fee.
There is an additional charge of $25 per guest.*

* Tutorial and Symposium attendees wishing to bring guests to the Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday receptions must pay an additional guest fee that in advance along with the Symposium registration fees. A "guest" is defined as a spouse or other person not registered for the meeting who wishes to attend only the catered functions (receptions only), and does not include additional organizational representatives. The guest fee for the Tuesday and Thursday receptions is $25.00. The guest fee for the Wednesday reception is $35.00. The guest fee does not include breakfasts, breaks, or lunches.

Sea World Tickets

Discounted tickets (10% discount) to Sea World may be purchased at the hotel from the Concierge located in the hotel lobby. Sea World opens at 10:00 am. The Concierge hours are 8:30 am to 8:00 pm. Booking tickets to Sea World and transportation to Sea World are not included in the Symposium arrangements. You are responsible for purchasing your own tickets and transportation to Sea World.
